“The congress decided to unanimously and by acclamation elect General Ossufo Momade as the candidate for the presidential elections on October 9. Therefore, yes, General Ossufo Momade was elected president of the party and Renamo’s candidate for the 2024 presidential elections”, José Manteigas told Lusa.
Ossufo Momade had already run for President of the Republic, with the support of Renamo, in the 2019 elections, having come second, with 21.88%, in a vote that re-elected Filipe Nyusi as head of state, with 73% of the votes.
Renamo’s jurisdictional council confirmed on Friday the election of Ossufo Momade as president of the party, which he has led since 2019, obtaining 57% of the votes at the congress that has been taking place since Wednesday in Alto Molócue, Zambézia province, thus guaranteeing a new five-year term.
The re-elected president guaranteed that he counts on the other candidates who contested the leadership of the largest opposition party at the congress and that “no one can be left out”.
“I am grateful and promise to work with everyone. All candidates. So that they can align with us, no one can be left out”, he said, in a speech at the congress, on Friday, after the official results were announced.
“We all have to work together (…) From today, I will work with everyone, I will not discriminate against anyone. There are no adversaries here, there are no enemies, but internal democracy”, he added.
The data validated by the jurisdictional council confirmed the victory of Ossufo Momade with 382 votes, among nine candidates.
710 party members were registered to vote in Renamo’s seventh congress and 674 votes were cast, including 26 abstentions, four null votes and six blank votes.
Renamo has been led since January 17, 2019, by Ossufo Momade, 63, elected after the death of the party’s historical leader, Afonso Dhlakama (1953-2018).
Elias Dhlakama, brother of the party’s historical leader, received 147 votes and Ivone Soares, deputy and former head of the parliamentary group, the first woman to run for the leadership of Renamo, 78 votes, according to data from the jurisdictional council.
The congress was marked by the exclusion of the candidacy for the leadership of Venâncio Mondlane, deputy and the party’s candidate in the October 2023 local elections for the municipality of Maputo, for not meeting the requirements of the profile defined by the party’s bodies.
Mondlane even resorted to the courts to force the inclusion of his candidacy, but, despite an injunction that was accepted by the court, the congress did not change the list of candidates submitted for voting nor did it allow his entry into the magna meeting.
Mozambique will hold general elections on October 9, which include, in addition to legislative and provincial elections, presidential elections, in which the current President, Filipe Nyusi, can no longer run, as he has reached the constitutional limit of two terms.
