Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Vincent Sabo of the New Brunswick Police Department announced today that a New Brunswick man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run that occurred early this morning in the City of New Brunswick.At approximately 1:24 a.m. today, the New Brunswick Police Department responded to a report of a pedestrian hit-and-run at 100 Jersey Avenue.
Upon arrival, authorities found a 25-year-old male from New Brunswick with serious injuries.
He was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
An investigation led by Officer Mark Smith of the New Brunswick Police Department and Sergeant Jonathan Berman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that a sedan driven by Abel Bustos-Medel, 31, of New Brunswick, struck the victim on Jersey Avenue and then fled the scene.
The sedan was later observed on Livingston Avenue, and the damage was consistent with a pedestrian crash.
Bustos-Medel was subsequently arrested without incident and charged with third-degree Assault by Auto, third-degree Leaving the Scene of a Serious Bodily Injury Accident, and Driving Under the Influence.Authorities are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area to contact Officer Mark Smith of the New Brunswick Police Department at 732-745-5005 or Sergeant Jonathan Berman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-4328.
