The shootings in the district headquarters began around 04:00 (05:00 in Lisbon), with the rebels appearing in the center of the town, coming from the Mucojo road, sources reported.
“We are not well, the terrorists are attacking, they arrived at dawn and I do not know for sure if anyone died or not,” a source told Lusa from a hiding place in Macomia.
The same sources indicated that the entire town of Macomia district headquarters is occupied by more than a hundred insurgents.
“I am saying that the shootings are happening everywhere, the terrorists have occupied the entire town and have not yet left, we do not know if this time they want to occupy it or not,” the source reported.
Some stores selling basic necessities and cars transporting passengers, goods and commerce were abandoned by their owners, due to fear.
“Nobody took anything, everything was abandoned, this time it was too much because we were already starting over,” a clothing merchant in the center of Macomia lamented to Lusa.
The town of Macomia is located on National Road 1 (N1), which connects to the northernmost districts, such as Muidumbe, Nangade, Mueda, Mocimboa da Praia and Palma, so this attack also interrupts land communication to the five districts.
Since October 2017, the province has been facing an armed rebellion with attacks claimed by movements associated with the extremist group Islamic State.
After several months of relative calm, since the beginning of the year new movements and rebel attacks have again caused thousands of displaced people, deaths, destruction of homes and public buildings.
