Mozambique. Frelimo candidate appointed interim general secretary

“The Political Commission appointed comrade Daniel Francisco Chapo to serve as interim secretary-general until the election of the new Frelimo secretary-general, at a session of the Central Committee”, reads the communiqué from the second extraordinary session of that body, which was held today in Maputo, led by the party president and head of state, Filipe Nyusi.

Frelimo’s secretary-general to date, Roque Silva, resigned from his post during the internal voting process to choose the party’s candidate for the post of President of the Republic in the elections of 9 October, during the extraordinary session of the party’s Central Committee, which lasted for three days and ended on 5 May.

The resignation was announced by Filipe Nyusi in his closing speech to the extraordinary session of the Central Committee, which elected Daniel Chapo as the party’s candidate to succeed him, recognising the attitude of Roque Silva, which allowed the vote to be unblocked.

In his speech, Nyusi praised “his stance of integrity, with the party’s principles, in voluntarily resigning his candidacy in the second round [of the Central Committee meeting] and his post as Frelimo secretary-general and consequently his membership of the political commission”.

The choice of Daniel Chapo by the Central Committee, which has 254 members, only came on the third day of the extraordinary meeting of that body, initially called for one day only, and after an internal vote, in the first round, in which he led, ahead of Roque Silva.

Since Mozambique’s independence, all the heads of state have been nominated by Frelimo, such as Samora Machel and Joaquim Chissano (south) and Armando Guebuza and Filipe Nyusi (north), so Daniel Chapo is the first to be nominated who was born in the central region of the country.

The deadline for submitting the lists of candidates for President of the Republic in the October elections to the Constitutional Council is 10 June.

On 9 October, Mozambique will hold its seventh presidential and legislative elections, the second for provincial governors and the fourth for provincial assemblies.

The current President, Filipe Nyusi, in office since 2014, can no longer run, having reached the constitutional limit of two terms.
