Dominica expresses concern over escalating gang violence in Haiti

Dominica has voiced profound distress over the escalating levels of deadly gang violence in Haiti, characterizing the situation as “catastrophic.”

During a ceremony to receive the credentials of the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to Dominica, the most Reverend Santiago De Wit Guzman, President Sylvanie Burton emphasized the gravity of the situation. 

She underscored that the distressing state of affairs in Haiti should command the attention of the global community.

President Burton articulated Dominica’s unwavering commitment to collaborate with the Holy See and other international stakeholders in addressing pressing issues that imperil sustainable growth, development, and the pursuit of peace.

Rising toll of violence

The toll of violence in Haiti paints a grim picture, with a significant surge in casualties documented in recent years.

In 2023 alone, 4,451 individuals lost their lives to gang violence, with 1,668 sustaining injuries. 

The distressing trend has intensified in the initial months of the current year, with an estimated 1,554 fatalities and 826 injuries reported.

Terror tactics and human tragedy

Gangs resort to abhorrent tactics, including sexual violence, to assert dominance and instill fear.

Women, in particular, bear the brunt of these atrocities, enduring rape and exploitation amidst the chaos of gang attacks. 

Many have witnessed the brutal demise of their loved ones, thrust into a harrowing cycle of violence and despair.

Call for unity and dialogue

President Burton emphasized the imperative of unity in confronting the multifaceted challenges ahead. 

She underscored the potential for dialogue and negotiation to bridge ideological chasms and pave the path toward resolution.

Navigating global challenges

Highlighting the vulnerabilities faced by small island developing states, President Burton enumerated a spectrum of global challenges inhibiting progress. 

From regional conflicts and inequalities to the looming specter of terrorism and the existential threat of climate change, the hurdles are manifold. 

Addressing these disparities demands concerted efforts on a global scale.

Strengthening diplomatic bonds

The Apostolic Nuncio conveyed the greetings of His Holiness during the ceremony, reaffirming the robust diplomatic ties between the Holy See and Dominica. 

He expressed optimism regarding the ongoing collaboration, underscoring its potential to foster mutual benefit and prosperity for both nations.
