Some Rutgers students concerned over student protests, uncertain how they’re going to finish school year

Rutgers University in New Brunswick postponed exams this morning due to an “anticipated escalation of protest activities.”

All exams that were scheduled to take place before noon on the College Avenue campus were postponed. No dates for the postponed exams have been announced. The university says more information will follow and that students should contact their deans for more information.

Activities on other campuses continued on as planned.

Students for Justice in Palestine and the Endowment Justice Collective set up dozens of tents on campus. The group alerted what it called an emergency protest at 7 a.m. The group also posted on social media and asked anyone to come down to Voorhees if they wanted their final exams cancelled. That post has since been deleted.

The announcement of postponed final exams has left some students uncertain how they are going to finish their year.

“I am a little flustered. I know of a lot of students that have had finals this morning. A bunch of my friends were studying all night for finals, and it’s really upsetting to see them just canceled and all their hard work is completely gone. And they don’t know when it’s going to be, they don’t know if they have to keep studying,” said Erin Mallory, a junior at Rutgers.

Seniors graduating this year in 2024 were high school seniors in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic forced classes to be remote. The pandemic also postponed some graduations in 2020.

Exams were scheduled to start today and end May 8, according to the university’s calendar.
