Ministry of Health and Human Services representatives attend CARPHA Executive Board and COHSOD meetings in Dominica

Honorable Shaun Malcolm, Minister of Health and Human Services accompanied by senior health officials from within the ministry of health, Tamera Howell-Robinson, Deputy Permanent Secretary, and Marah Smith, Head of Secretariat, recently attended the CARPHA (Caribbean Public Health Agency) Executive Board and the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) of the CARICOM Meetings, in Roseau, Dominica during the period 27th – 28th March, 2024.

The CARPHA Executive Board Meeting brought together health officials and experts from across the Caribbean region to discuss regional public health priorities and strategies and to be updated on CARPHA’s report on the initiatives for the remainder of the calendar year. Malcolm had the opportunity to engage with key stakeholders and contributed to the development of policies and programs aimed at improving public health outcomes in the region and that will also affect the TCI.

Following the CARPHA Executive Board Meeting, the minister participated in the special meeting of COHSOD, which specifically focused on the “Caribbean Moves Initiative.” This initiative aims to address the rising rates of non-communicable diseases in the Caribbean by promoting physical activity, healthy eating, and overall wellness.

Hon. Malcolm joined other regional leaders in discussing the implementation and expansion of the initiative to ensure its success in improving the health and well-being of Caribbean citizens. Dr. Christopher Tufton, the Minister of Health and Wellness Jamaica, made a special presentation on the experiences and lessons learned from the “Jamaica Moves” initiative.

During the meetings, Hon. Malcolm had the opportunity to collaborate in bilateral discussions with counterparts from other Caribbean countries, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing in the areas of public health and social development. Hon. Malcolm’s participation in these meetings underscores the government’s commitment to promoting health and well-being in the Turks and Caicos Islands and its dedication to working collaboratively with regional partners to address public health challenges.

Malcolm stated: “The Ministry of Health has an excellent relationship with CARPHA and we appreciate all the help and resources they have provided to us. My Ministry understands the challenges CARPHA may face but we are committed to work collaboratively with CARPHA and our regional stakeholders to ensure this organization remain a valuable asset throughout the region.” The Minister also went on to say “In relation to our LET’S MOVE TCI initiative, we have gained some very insightful information as how to drive this initiative forward and take it to a new level that will promote a healthier lifestyle across the Turks and Caicos Islands.”
