SITUATION OVERVIEW

Armed violence continues across the country, particularly in Ouest, home department of the capital city of Port-au-Prince. On 23 April, armed assailants attacked the commune of Arcahaie, according to media reports. In the capital city, the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy was looted and vandalized, an act that civil society and the humanitarian community have strongly condemned. Health care facilities must be respected and protected, as such attacks harm key sectors that are already under severe strain due to the crisis.

The number of IDPs in the ZMPAP has seen a slight increase of 1.4 per cent since 4 April, with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) recording 90,254 displaced people at 85 active sites as of 20 April. New displacements in the capital and towards other departments are creating additional needs, particularly in health. As of 11 April, and since the resurgence of cholera that began in October 2022, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) reports 82,875 suspected cases of cholera. During this period, 80,436 people were hospitalized, with 4,836 cases confirmed and 1,270 deaths. Suspected cholera cases in the departments of Artibonite, Centre, Nord and Ouest account for more than half of the country’s total cases.

In the past 3 weeks, the logistics sector has retrieved over 100 humanitarian containers at the Caribbean Port Services (CPS) port. The main terminal at Varreux, where fuel reserves are stored, has been closed since 22 April due to repeated attacks by armed groups. This situation could lead to even more severe restrictions in gasoline supply.
