Dominica: Soon, the world’s longest cable car will reveal the second-largest boiling lake amidst exotic wilderness

In the heart of Dominica’s vibrant landscapes, a hidden treasure awaits- the world’s second-largest boiling lake. Tucked away in the heart of a dense rainforest, this natural wonder is like a well-guarded secret, inviting only the boldest explorers to uncover its mysteries.

Getting to the ‘Boiling Lake’ is no walk in the park; it’s a challenging six-hour trek that’s part adventure and part endurance test. The trek to this natural hot spring is a formidable barrier, preventing countless individuals from fulfilling their dream of witnessing it.

Recognising this, the Commonwealth of Dominica is embarking on an ambitious project – the construction of the world’s longest single-section mono cable car.

The Boiling Lake is a volcanic hydrothermal masterpiece, a geological ballet choreographed by the Earth’s ancient forces. For years, it has been known only by the locals. With the construction of the cable car, the attraction is poised to be popular on the global stage, revealing the enchanting performance to those who seek the magic that lies within the heart of Dominica’s untamed landscapes.

The ongoing Dominica Cable Car project is showing significant momentum as it advances towards completion. Every day, the project marks a remarkable stride as Dominica is steadily moving closer to making the “world’s longest mono-cable car” come to reality.

The project has been receiving increasing attention as time passes, breeding excitement and intrigue in the local populace, tourism industry experts, and travellers around the world.

The project is a joint venture between ABL Holdings Limited and Doppelmayr, a world leader in cable car technology. With over 131 years of experience building cable cars worldwide, Doppelmayr is renowned for its innovative designs and has been responsible for some of the most iconic cable car installations globally, including the Peak 2 Peak Gondola in Whistler, Canada and the Mi Teleférico in La Paz, Bolivia.

Journey to the ‘Boiling Lake’ on the cable car

Spanning an impressive 4.1 miles, the cable car promises not only a Guinness World Record but an enchanting journey through Dominica’s picturesque landscapes. Travellers will traverse the tropical rainforest, witnessing breathtaking waterfalls and finally arriving at the world-famous Boiling Lake. It will pass on the top of the famous Trafalgar Falls, offering enchanting views of water cascading down the rift.

Individuals can also see the deep and rugged river gorges and canyoning, which will provide passengers with stunning scenery. The cable car will cut through the clouds on its way to the destination, providing no better way to experience the ‘Nature Isle’. A spokesperson representing Doppelmayr stated that even though the company has been a part of thousands of major cable car construction projects, the Dominica Cable Car Project stands out as a unique prospect like no other.

In his opinion, this is because the Dominica cable car is the only project that will pass through pristine rainforests, waterfalls, and river gorges, cut through the clouds, and finally reach the boiling lake. The greenery, waterfalls, and fauna of Dominica, especially in the vicinity of the ‘Boiling Lake’ and the cable car construction site, have been described by sources as unparalleled in their beauty.

The Dominica cable car project is a path-breaking undertaking, especially for the Caribbean. Due to its scale and scope and the impact experts believe it will have on the Caribbean tourism industry, the project has gained international attention.

A chance to explore nature

The Boiling Lake alone is a major draw for tourists, and the fact that it will be far more accessible now due to the cable car, adds to its value significantly. The lake is located within the Valley of Desolation in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park of Dominica and has been left largely unexplored due to the difficulty of reaching it on foot.

To sweeten the pot, the cable car journey to the lake itself passes through one of the most beautiful jungles in the world, which is also home to the Sisserou Parrot, known as ‘Amazona imperalis’ according to scientific nomenclature.

If visitors are lucky, they could catch a glimpse of one of the most beautiful birds in the world. The bird is said to be quite impressive visually, which is why its likeness has found its way on Dominica’s coat of arms, public seal, and even the national flag, among other things.

A part of the cable car journey that many are excited about is the prospect of watching it rise beyond the cloud line while on its way up to the top station. The experience has been described as being akin to rising up into heaven which sounds like an impressive site to witness.

A highly anticipated project

The project’s influence is such that the entire Caribbean region is excited by its potential. This is because the cable car project will open some of the most exciting and highly anticipated sites in Dominica to tourists.

Once the project is complete and fully functional, the rate of disembarking from cruise ships is expected to go up. In fact, tourism experts in the Caribbean are expecting the frequency and quantity of cruise liners coming to Dominica to increase, making the nation one of the primary hot spots for tourists visiting the Caribbean.

In fact, the feasibility report says that the Dominica Cable Car Project will triple the nation’s tourism footfall, bringing in a substantial amount of capital that the nation and its people will benefit from. This assessment has been echoed in the Feasibility Report on the tourism industry in Dominica. Industry experts have asked the nation and its government to be prepared for a rise in the influx of tourists and visitors to the nation in the near future.1

A boom to the service & hospitality industry

As a result, the transport, hotel and ecotourism industries are also being reinforced to match the needs of visitors who are expected to arrive at Dominica’s shores in throngs. The net result of these developments is that Dominica has the potential to become the primary tourist destination in the Caribbean, which would an achievement considering the fact that the entire region looks to tourism as a major source of capital.

What is even more impressive is that the cable car project will become the crown jewel in this expansive industry that Dominica is looking to build and preserve in the coming years.

Capacity and More

Recently, while sharing an update on the cable car project, construction manager Randy Gliege said that he is impressed by the work done by the construction team and has a very positive outlook on its effect on the local population, the nation, and the region as a whole.

He explained that the project is quite an impressive and unique undertaking, even for an experienced operator like him. His team is currently in the process of building the world’s longest single-section cable car, with each cabin having the capacity to hold 10 passengers at a time. The mechanism works both ways simultaneously and has the ability to ferry 1000 people up and down its route per hour, an impressive number indeed.

According to Gliege, the expected time of completion for the project has been set for December 2025, and the construction team is currently focusing on completing the assembly of tower structures and preparing the last few anchors and foundations.

The addition of a helicopter to its arsenal has allowed the construction team to airlift equipment, materials and workers, thus saving time and expediting the tasks necessary to meet construction objectives.

The Dominica cable car project’s importance to the nation is evident from its garnering attention from residents, neighbours in the Caribbean, and the rest of the world. Most astute observers recognise that the project is a game-changer for the region and is expected to usher in a new era which will see tourism in the Caribbean break past its current glass ceiling.

The subsequent monetary benefits for the nation and its people are innumerable, and Dominica’s pursuit of this change with sustainability and climate resilience in mind is an added bonus.
