Dominica: Residents affected by landfill fire advised to wear masks

As efforts continue in Dominica to contain a fire at the Fond Cole Sanitary Landfill, the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation has advised residents of communities affected by smoke who may have respiratory issues, to wear disposable masks as much as possible.

The landfill was closed effective Monday, April 29 because of an ongoing Landfill fire.

The Corporation in statement expressed regret and sympathises with the Stockfarm, Fondcole, communities, commuters, or anyone else who at this present time is discomforted because of the smoke emanating from the fire.

During this time the Corporation has advised haulers and the public to store their waste in their facility until further notice.

Presently the fire department and other stakeholders including the Dominica Water and Sewerage Company Limited (Dowasco) and the Office of Disaster Management (ODM) have been instrumental in providing resources required to combat the fire and bring normalcy to the surrounding communities and the Dominica Public.

Currently, the use of multiple excavators, dump trucks, and water trucks are being utilised to contain and extinguish the Landfill fire.

The Corporation is also preparing alternate access to accommodate garbage disposal which it envisage will commence on Tuesday, April 30 by noon.
