Copper wire thefts on the rise in N.B.

Mounties throughout New Brunswick are looking for help to identify potential copper wire thefts.

Police say a spike in copper wire thefts since 2022 has led to millions of dollars worth of losses.

Copper wire thefts also pose a major public safety risk as it can limit access to 911 and other critical infrastructure.

“Typically, with copper wire thefts the individuals will cut down the wire and will then melt it down before trying to sell it to licensed or unlicensed salvage dealers,” said RCMP Cpl. Kevin Jones.

“During the process of melting down the wire, very thick, black smoke is often present in the area which can be a good way to identify what’s happening.”

If you see thick, black smoke, or suspicious activity, you are urged to contact your local police department immediately.

Those purchasing salvaged parts or metals are also encouraged to make sure the product has been legally acquired.

In addition, police are also reminding the public about the dangers associated with copper wire theft, adding that vandalizing electrical equipment can cause serious injuries including death.
