Starting in the early morning of March 24th, intese rainfall in Maputo has led to extensive flooding of neighbourhoods across the provinceof Maputo. Over 50mm in less than 24hours were registered. Raind conitnues at 8am on March 25th, with situation expected to worsen. The capacity of the rivers and drainage systems is already limited due to the tropical storm Filipo. Neighbourhoods in low areas close to the rivers are flooding (rivers Maputo, Umbeluzi, Incomapti, and Limpopo). For Maputo Province, there is talk of a worsening flood situation in the Basins, resulting in the inaccessibility of access roads, particularly in the neighbourhoods of Liberdade, Fomento, Khongolote, Matola A and C and some districts such as Marracuene, Boane, Matutuine and Moamba, especially for families living in low-lying areas. In Maputo city, 8 main roads have been delcared impassable due to complete flooding. All public transport has been suspended. The electric grid has gone down, with EDM (Energy of Mozambique) reporting that around 15 thousand people across Maputo, Gaza, and Inhambane will be affected. EDM reports higher risks of being electrocute and urges people to stay away from electronic equipment and wires that have fallen in streets.
The INGD (National Disaster Management Institute) has already scheduled an emergency operations meeting for today at 10.00 am.
